SpellForce: Conquest of Eo - Demon Scourge PC

Demon Scourge is the first "major" expansion for SpellForce: Conquest of Eo - an RPG-enhanced and such sub-genre-specific 4X turn-based fantasy strategy from 2023. Like the "base", the add-on was developed by Austrian studio Owned by Gravity. In turn, it was published by THQ Nordic.

The plot

The land of Eo is threatened by a new danger - the titular plague of demons. Monsters from hell are invading new regions in order to draw their life energy, which they want to use for their evil purposes. Not only that, but hosts of trolls are descending from the g?rms. They have been driven from the seats of their ancestors, and are now ravaging the towns and settlements in their path.

The player must deal with both problems, while discovering the connection between them. He can do this in two ways - by putting an end to the march of the demons and thwarting their plans, or by allying with them on the way to a common goal.

Gameplay innovations

Regardless of the strategy you decide on, theDemon Scourge expansion introduces a number of strictly gameplay innovations to the game. Among the most important of these are:

1. demonologist archetype - the fourth (next to alchemist, necromancer and inventor) character class of sorts, which we can choose for our mage at the beginning of the game (each has different spells and skills, and gives access to different buildings);
2. occult school - a separate type of spells that we can teach the protagonist;
3. 25 units and more than 30 upgrades for them;
4. 25 structures that can be added to the wizard's tower (the player's base, which can be moved to different corners of the map);
5. Two (initially) hostile factions - demons and trolls - and bosses in the form of demonic lords;
6. 120 main and side quests;
7. two victory conditions.

Mechanics

In terms ofgameplay per se, theDemon Scourgeadd-on does not introduce major changes to SpellForce: Conquest of Eo. The game still consists of taking over the inheritance of our Master, discovering the secrets of his research and fighting other mages who want to get these secrets for themselves. Exploring the map, completing quests and acquiring resources, we gain access to more and more advanced buildings and more powerful units, which with each turn brings us closer to victory.

However, new quests, units, upgrades, spells and character classes significantly expand the repertoire of strategies we can take to achieve our goal. In addition, the storyline of the expansion takes place alongside the events of the "base", making each successive session even more different from the previous ones than before.

Technical issues

If only because of the latter, Demon Scourge is not a standalone add-on. This means that in order to play it, you must also own the base version of SpellForce: Conquest of Eo.
